Introduction
Udemy is an online learning platform that offers courses across a wide range of fields, including business, IT, design, languages, marketing, and professional certifications. Centered on video courses created by experts and companies, learners can study at their own pace via the internet. Courses may include not only video materials but also practice questions, assignments, resources, and certificates of completion, accommodating everything from acquiring foundational knowledge to improving practical skills. In addition, because it can be used from a PC, smartphone, or tablet, learners can proceed regardless of location or time. Beyond individual skill development, the enterprise-oriented Udemy Business also provides a learning environment that supports talent development and reskilling across an entire organization.
Applicable Scene
Udemy is widely used by individuals who want to systematically learn a specific field and by companies aiming to improve employee skills. For example, when wanting to acquire IT skills such as programming, cloud computing, data analysis, AI, or project management, learners can study step by step through courses taught by instructors with practical experience. It is also used for exam preparation, language learning, strengthening business skills, and mastering design tools. In companies, it can be used as teaching material for new employee training, management training, digital talent development, and cross-departmental reskilling, enabling organizational education while managing participation status and learning progress. Furthermore, because learners can select only the courses they need, it is also suitable as a learning foundation that complements group training or long-term educational programs.
Pros: Udemy’s greatest advantage is that learners can choose materials suited to their goals from an extremely large number of courses across fields and levels. Learners can study while confirming the instructor’s explanations in video format, and since playback speed adjustment and repeated viewing are supported, they can proceed according to their level of understanding. Additionally, with one-time purchase courses, learners may be able to use them over the long term at their own convenience, and compared to in-person schools, there are fewer time and location constraints. Because courses can be selected by referring to learner reviews and ratings, it is easier to confirm content and difficulty before starting to learn. For enterprises, Udemy Business supports continuous employee capability development through access to a wide range of courses, learning management, and visualization of participation status.
Cons: While Udemy has a large number of courses, the quality of content, clarity of explanations, and frequency of information updates vary depending on the instructor and course. Particularly in fields where technology changes rapidly, such as programming and cloud services, courses may be based on older versions, so it is necessary to check the publication date and last update date. Additionally, because it is fundamentally a self-study format, learners may abandon a course midway if they lack the will to create a study plan and persist with it. Some courses offer limited exercises and individual feedback, and acquiring the applied skills needed in practice may require separate project experience or supplementary materials. When introducing it in a company, simply distributing courses does not lead to sufficient results, so it is important to operate it in combination with setting learning objectives, securing study time, checking progress, and supporting application to actual work.
